Experiences of International Students at a Rural Midwest University: Challenges and Choices

Abstract

As trends in the enrollment of U.S. students diminish, more colleges and university shift their focus to the recruitment of international students. The National Student Clearinghouse (2017) has reported that college enrollment is down by 1.7 million students since 2011, showing a six- year trend decline. The number of students is predicted to fall by 15% after 2025 (Barshay, 2018). Presumably efforts to draw students on a global scale can offset these drops. Many institutions of higher education believe that the international fields should be a focus; however, this belief is a major concern as trends shift in migration and globalization. In light of this, what can universities learn from the experiences of international students at a rural Midwest university?
