What Strategies Put Students at Risk for Failing to Attain Their Study Goals Before, During, and After a Goal-Setting Intervention?

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study examined the level of risk associated with strategies students report using before, during and after a goal setting intervention. Risk ratio analyses were conducted to identify strategies that put students at risk for attaining goals they set for independent studying sessions. Drawing on event-based data collected over nine weeks (3 weeks before, during and after a goal setting intervention), we examined risk ratios associated with utilizing specific strategies to address motivation, cognitive, planning, and mental health challenges encountered during studying. Findings differentiated high risk strategies for each type of challenge from low risk strategies. Differences in high and low risk strategies emerged after students received a goal setting intervention guiding them to set more specific studying goals.
