Digital games give young learners (K-6) opportunities to explore and participate in the digital learning environment. However, the debate around using digital games in elementary classrooms continues. To understand the current state of digital game-based learning research, we conducted a systematic review of 10-years empirical studies (May 2009 - May 2019) focusing on digital game-based learning and pedagogical activities in elementary classrooms. The results indicated that although the usage of digital games vary in terms of time and patterns, teachers’ pedagogical activities influence young learners' learning outcomes positively. Our findings contribute to the literature with a broader view on digital game-based learning and offer insights for educators and researchers to effectively implement game-based learning pedagogical strategies for young learners.
