Growing Coaching Forward: Video Analysis as a High-Leverage Practice for Instructional Coach Learning

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Abstract. This paper addresses the research gap on instructional coach preparation (Gallucci et al., 2010; Woulfin & Rigby, 2017) by examining coach learning experiences within a job-embedded professional development series. In particular, this qualitative case study explores how video analysis can be used within online professional learning communities (PLCs) as a tool to foster instructional coach reflection into practice. While previous research indicates that feedback generated by video analysis is often superficial in nature (Ellis, McFadden, Anwar, & Roehrig, 2015; Lebak, 2018), this study illustrates how discourse can deepen inquiry and be leveraged to address social justice issues at the core of coaching efforts. Furthermore, the virtual context documents instructional advances useful to leadership development more broadly.
