Fostering Wonderment: Improving Students' Question-Asking Practice in Science Using Computer Models Connected to Experiments

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) defines “asking questions” as an essential science and engineering practice. In a week-long science unit using the Anonymous, approach students perform hands-on experiments, design models and finally interact and compare real data with computational models. In this paper, we describe the unit of heat conduction that took place in a low socio-economic background 5th-grade class. We present the instructional sequence and demonstrate a significant increase in content knowledge as well as improved modeling skills. We illustrate how this framework improves students' curiosity about science and specifically heat-transfer. Students are asking more questions and in addition, the nature of their questions evolves during their participation in the activity.
