We examine the major areas of focus from consensus reports of literacy cognition and mathematics cognition research in order to make predictions about the opportunities and challenges that may occur in the predictable future in the area of student’s mathematical cognition. We use Kahneman’s idea of “taking the outside view” (Kahneman & Lovallo, 1993) to frame our examination in order to understand the previous challenges and discoveries from the field of literacy to extrapolate the future of mathematics cognition research. The 20 most cited works from literacy and mathematics are compared systematically to deduce patterns of exploration across each field and how the field of literacy cognitive research may inform the field of mathematics cognitive research.
