The purpose of this paper presentation is to revisit Dewey’s (1916) ideas set forth in Democracy and Education, in consideration of responding to questions pressing on education as well as to address problems confronting the public today. In particular, the symposium will consider Dewey’s (1927) concerns set forth in The Public and Its Problems and the problems that the Public faces today, examining the work of education in a democratic society. Specifically, the paper will focus upon the myriad of social issues that make hallmark the public’s distancing from schools and the distancing of democratic practices from education
