There is minimal research on the extent that informal math practice has on math competence. This study examined the use of a cloud-based app—IXL Math—to supplement math instruction in a midwestern school district. The analysis uses propensity score matching to provide a comparison group to assess the impact of using the app for math practice on standardized assessment scores, controlling for variables such as race/ethnicity, gender and prior math achievement. Logistic regression results from a sample of students in grades 1 through 5 (N = 2,944) from the 2018–19 academic year show that partaking in IXL Math practice is positively associated with achieving Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) math target growth scores (OR = 1.67, 95% CI [1.19, 2.36]).
