Hip hop based approaches to group work with adolescents have developed within the literature across the last two decades. When considering group work facilitation, debates exist regarding the most effective leadership style to generate positive youth outcomes. Hip hop, counseling, and social work literature lacks studies that compare the effectiveness of different group types. Results suggest social and emotional benefits for youth including, experiencing increased confidence, community, and a willingness to step outside of their comfort zones.
