Abstract

This study uses the Black Girls' Literacy Framework first developed by Muhammad & Haddix (2016) to examine how Black adolescent girls enact critical literacy practices in response to a critical text written by a Black female author. Data was collected using three Black girl participants who read Angie Thomas’ The Hate U Give (2017). Major themes that emerged from the data was the participants’ negotiation of identity, the creation of narratives to counter stereotypes, and text/verbal resistance in both their discourse practices and social processes. Findings from this study call on literacy educators to correct past pedagogical injustices and utilize an affirming, culturally sustaining framework such as the BGLF that embraces the multi-modal literacies of Black girls.
