Abstract

Blended learning is an increasingly popular instructional approach in postsecondary education. Blended learning combines face-to-face an online instruction to maximize student engagement both in and out of the classroom. This paper uses fixed effects analyses to estimate differences in student performance following an abrupt. institution-wide shift to blended instruction which impacted all enrolled students. On average, students were less likely to complete, pass, or earn an A or B in courses following the shift to blended instruction. This reduction is greater for undergraduates and it is robust across races and genders. These results suggest important considerations for colleges and universities seeking to transition some or all courses to hybrid or blended formats.
