Planting Seeds: Preservice Teachers' Understandings of Classroom Management and Classroom Professionalism

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

The current study tracks the evolution of pre-service teacher (PST) perceptions, as they relate to classroom management over the course of their internship experience. The repeated-measures, qualitative study was implemented in a required course regarding professional roles and responsibilities taken concurrently with the PSTs’ internship placements. The authors created three profiles of PSTs perceptions over time using discourse analysis of the survey responses of 84 PSTs. The data provide evidence of a shift in PST views throughout the academic year. This study has implications for how teacher preparation programs understand and support candidate growth and preparedness.
