Abstract

Through a school- and university-based collaboration, the current study investigated an asset-based mapping project in a K-8 public school in an urban context. More specifically, students and teachers in grades three and five created and shared maps of their own cultural experiences and assets. Their perceptions of this project and the maps themselves are explored and analyzed as a way to envision culturally relevant pedagogies in action and possibilities for their impacts on learning and building classroom-community connections. Results indicate a starting point for teachers and students to self-reflect, learn about others, and generate classroom community.
