Academic Mission Support: The Effect of Academic Coaching on Military and Veteran Students

Abstract

Non-traditional students tend to have different enrollment patterns, financial challenges, and family obligations that can impose obstacles to persistence not faced by traditional undergraduates. Military-connected students, active-duty service members and veterans for example, fall under the definition of non-traditional students and may face obstacles to persistence that are different from their civilian counterparts. Recent research has shown that academic coaching improves undergraduate retention in traditional undergraduate settings. In this paper, I investigate the impact of academic coaching specifically on military-connected students attending a private, nonprofit university with a campus located on a U.S. Air Force Base. I find small, non-significant effects of coaching on two, six, and twelve-term persistence and the likelihood of enrolling continuously in the short term.
