Critical Witnessing and Spatial Justice: The Possibilities of Counter-Monuments in Social Studies Teacher Education

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Pre-service teachers (PSTs) often lack racial content knowledge when entering social studies teacher education programs and struggle to teach from an anti-racist lens. In this multiple case study, I examine how the incorporation of a counter-monument and museum field trip encourage critical witnessing and spatial justice among PSTs, prompting questions of how counter-monuments may be useful in preparing anti-racist social studies educators.
