This study examines the effectiveness of a Trauma-Informed Approach (TIA) in fostering resilience among trauma-impacted children at a local elementary school. Analysis of educator questionnaires and interviews revealed that trauma impedes holistic development, resulting in difficulties with emotional regulation, academic functioning, behavioral control, and physical well-being. Abandoning traditional punitive discipline models that often re-traumatize children, the focal school adopted a TIA which emphasizes cultivating relationships, sharing control, addressing issues promptly, providing socio-emotional instruction, and embracing a growth mindset. As a result, student scores on achievement tests increased; motivation, self-advocacy, and confidence improved; student comparison and emotional dysregulation decreased; and relationships were strengthened. Implications for embracing a TIA in an effort to minimize trauma’s harm and maximize student resilience are discussed.
