Gay Is the New Black? How Seeking Queer Inclusion Reproduces Race, Class, and Gender Inequality

Abstract

In this conceptual paper we explore the material realities and ideological formation of black male queer identity, space, and thought. Grounded in black radical intellectual thought, we argue that the university’s inclusion of queerness as an identity group and analytic has intentionally and coincidentally limited black queer male perspectives because of class and criminal status, excluded from political economy (institutionalize social system). Through a critical narrative of our experiences we engage collectively to deepen our understanding of our positionalities that resist the forces of being in a neoliberal institution. Our thinking in this paper contributes to the theorizing of black queer male experiences while providing a complex analysis of the practices that produce knowledge and relations within the university setting.
