Improvement Over Time: Adapting Grade 9 On-Track Indicators to Better Target Student Interventions in Connecticut's Context

Abstract

This study explored the relevance of applying the Network for College Success’ Grade 9 On-Track Framework to increase the post-secondary success of Connecticut high school students. The new Grade 9 on-track categories used significantly predicted on-time graduation. Compared to students who were on-track in grades and attendance, off-track students had 98% lower odds of on-time graduation, almost on-track students had 84% lower odds of on-time graduation, and on-track but chronically absent students had 74% lower odds of on-time graduation. The findings also provided early evidence of increased on-track rates within network high schools: Grade 9 students were 2.4 times as likely to end the year on-track during the comparison year (2017-18) than during the baseline year (2014-15).
