Adaptive learning environments deal with student heterogeneity in productive ways by capitalizing on student differences. However, as teaching in such environments constantly changes over time due to its adaptive nature, it has been difficult to assess adaptive teaching with traditional research instruments. In the present study, we developed an experience-sampling instrument to measure students’ perception of adaptive learning environments from an inter- and intra-individual perspective. We provided 94 seventh and eighth graders with tablet-computers and asked them about their in situ perception of the classroom environment over the course of one week. In total, we analyzed 594 data points using two-level linear mixed-effects models. Results point to the usefulness of the newly-developed instrument in analyzing adaptive learning environments.
