Developing Tools for Digitally Mediated Ideation in Design Thinking: A Pre-Conference Workshop Design Case

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper reports the results of a case study developed around a pre-conference workshop. Both the focus and the design of the workshop centered around design thinking: the workshop a) leveraged the design thinking process model and b) encouraged creative generation of digitally-mediated ideation tools in design thinking. The ideation process – writing creative ideas on sticky notes and collaboratively selecting a focus – is a valuable phase of design thinking but has so far proven difficult to enact digitally. A design case of the workshop is presented, as well as themes that emerged from analysis of outcomes. The work concludes with implications for future development of online collaborative tools for enacting ideation as part of the design thinking process.
