Integrating Computational Thinking Into Elementary Botany Through Robotics: Video Analysis of Student Challenges and Interactions

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

As the effort to integrate computational thinking (CT) in different content areas continues to prosper, little is revealed in terms of students’ challenges and interactions in problem-solving. Aimed at understanding the challenges and interactions that the two elementary girls experienced, this study uses the Collaborative Computing Observation Instrument (CCOI) to analyze screen-captured data. The CCOI is a web-based analysis instrument that represents students’ independent working and interaction with nodes and paths that specify the nature of students’ interactions and challenges. It also captures students’ time spent on task (independent and collaborative). Results revealed that participants mainly worked independently on the CT-integrated task, with short interactions and discussions on software navigation, academic content, and computing. Discussions and implications were also included.
