Preschool children naturally demonstrate many of the characteristics of scientists and engineers, yet often lack the resources and opportunity to engage in those practices - particularly when they come from low-socioeconomic communities. This paper describes a media-based intervention designed to improve the learning environment of children in underserved areas. Using Bandura’s model of triadic reciprocal determinism as a theoretical framework, this mixed methods case study explores the effects of various forms of media on children’s understanding of the nature of science and perceptions about who might participate in those fields. Developed through a multi-organizational partnership, this study offers insights into how children’s media organizations and academic researchers might create more equitable learning experiences for all students.
