When Land-Grant Institutions Become Hispanic-Serving: A Competing Logics Perspective

Abstract

This theoretical paper looks at the intersection of two institutional identities and their interplay: Land-grant institutions (LGIs) and Hispanic-Serving institutions (HSIs). To date, there are 2 HSIs and 4 Emerging HSIs who also identify as land-grant institutions. We draw on work on competing institutional logics by Reay and Hinings (2009) to theorize the strengths and challenges of these types of institutions and conceptualize ways in which the opportunities found at one could help complement the challenges of the other identity. This paper takes into account the histories, missions, and purposes of these types of institutions and considers the ways in which these institutional identities can be mutually beneficial in boosting the ability of these universities to effectively serve Latinx students.
