The Young Adult Diversion Court (YADC) was created to help young people between 17- 20 successfully complete requirements of probation. This research explores the integration of creative and expressive arts in the YADC and the perceived benefits of participation. Ethnographic observations were conducted at court and programming session, and interpretive interviews were held with court officials, program coordinators, and young adult participants. Participants felt cared for and supported by staff in the YADC. The use of spoken-word allowed participants to explore their identities, regulate emotions, and build self- confidence. This research suggests the potential of alternative approaches in the criminal justice system that intervene in the lives of young adults, and that help participants rewrite their own life stories.
