Switching From Classification of Secondary School Courses to School Courses for the Exchange of Data: How It Affects NAEP High School Transcript Study Trends

Abstract

The upcoming 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) High School Transcript Study (HSTS) will use the School Courses for the Exchange of Data (SCED) course coding system to code high school students’ transcripts, instead of the Classification of Secondary School Courses (CSSC) course coding system used in the past. While the CSSC and SCED assign courses to the same subject areas for the majority of secondary courses, there are a number of courses where the CSSC and SCED disagree on subject area. This paper utilizes the NAEP HSTS data from 1990 to 2009 to look at the effects of switching from CSSC to SCED will have on subject-specific coursetaking trends.
