Abstract

This paper shares how comics communities are both learning and appropriating (Engeström, 1999; Grossman, Smagorinsky, & Valencia, 1999) second languages in a metropolitan area in Colombia. This study shows how membership and participation in the culture and communities of comics involves the use of the language at different levels and how multiple languages participate in the process of growing from baseline interest to a more detailed mastery of the source materials, while illustrating the implications for more just and equitable language learning and use in emerging multilingual societies.
