Identifying and Rating Quality Graphic Novels

Abstract

As graphic novels gain more prominence in terms of prestigious literary awards, book sales, and use in schools, there has also been an accompanying move toward a “graphic novel canon” (Weiner, 2012), where a relatively small group of book are typically taught or included as representative works for the entire medium. This project seeks to provide insight into educators who are interested in using graphic novels to teach but may not be informed about how best to identify or rate worthwhile titles.
