In recent years, the discourse of internationalization has been moved from the periphery to the center in higher education dialogues. However, the perspectives of international education professionals as interpreters and implementers of internationalization are rarely considered. This study probes international education professionals’ perceived understandings and challenges in internationalization and enquires into the support and resources needed in the context of U.S. higher education. Results show that international education professionals have differing definitions of internationalization; and political climate, infrastructure, senior leadership, and faculty support are the most frequently occurring themes about the current challenges to internationalization in U.S. higher education. This study informs institutional leaders and organizational stakeholders about major obstacles to internationalization practices in U.S. higher education.
