Despite the importance of math literacy for all careers, the latest NAEP mathematics evaluation (2017) shows just 40% of fourth-grade students in the US score at or above the Proficient level. Active learning and manipulatives show promise for improving student understanding and achievement in math. Our novel instructional technology, which combines active learning and math manipulatives with robotics, aims to improve math engagement and learning for elementary-aged students. This tool, called Owlet, was designed to support math instruction and integrate easily into existing classrooms. Owlet, along with corresponding curricula, was pilot tested in three classrooms after teachers participated in professional development. Through these pilots, we found evidence that Owlet supported our goals for learning and classroom compatibility.
