The Effect of Higher Performing Tenured Peers on Novice Teacher Retention in Turnaround Schools

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Students in turnaround schools often experience the effects of high teacher turnover and inexperienced, novice teachers. Limited research has explored teacher peer effects on novice teacher retention, particularly in turnaround schools. The current study uses a quantitative approach to examine the influence of teacher effectiveness on novice teacher retention in Tennessee turnaround schools. Taken as a whole, tenured teacher and novice teacher effectiveness did not have a statistically significant influence on novice teacher retention. When analyzing by type of turnaround, the more disruptive turnaround reform showed a statistically significant negative effect of tenured teacher effectiveness on novice teacher retention. For the least disruptive reform, the interaction between effectiveness of tenured teachers and novice teachers had a statistically significant positive effect.
