This qualitative case study identifies and analyzes Texas public school educators’ (in-service and retired) definitions of, perceptions of, and motivations for political engagement. Specifically, the study examines how public school educators’ membership in a grassroots group, Texans for Public Education (T4PE), has influenced and impacted their careers and personal lives. Data sources include the researchers’ participant observation, a questionnaire of T4PE members, and semi-structured interviews withT4PE educators (selected through purposeful sampling). Much of public education is determined by the legislative process; however, the Texas Education Agency only minimally addresses the need for advocacy through teacher certification. Findings from this study will inform educator preparation programs seeking to prepare future educators to advocate for their students and for the profession.
