This presentation considers Indigenous language learning within post-secondary institutions in collaboration with Indigenous communities. Findings are drawn from a three-year national project in Canada, the National Centre for Collaboration in Indigenous Education (NCCIE), a digital platform to highlight Indigenous educators across Canada (nccie.ca). The authors of this paper are NCCIE researchers for northwestern Ontario. This presentation shares Indigenous participants’ visions of effective and relevant pedagogical approaches for Indigenous Language (IL) instruction that emerged from interviews. Their visions caused us to reflect on how post-secondary institutions can support IL speakers to revitalize Indigenous languages. As a result, we imagined a ‘third space’ to foster collaborations amongst academics and Indigenous community instructors to realize their visions for functional, immersive language revitalization pedagogies.
