Facilitating an Early Childhood Critical Literacy Junk Art Club With Preservice Teachers: A Self-Study

Abstract

Critical literacy is an integral part of a literacy program. Currently teacher education programs are focusing on preparing preservice teachers to navigate a push down curriculum and little time is given to critical literacy. This self-study was designed to contemplate how I could facilitate preservice teachers enacting critical literacy in a junk art club with early childhood children. Through conducting a self-study at a northeast urban community college, I found it was essential that I identified and processed my emotions throughout the JAC as well as integrated the preservice teachers understanding to expand my definition of critical literacy.
