Using Personalized Learning as an Instructional Approach to Motivate Learners in Online Higher Education: Learner Self-Determination and Intrinsic Motivation

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this comparison study using qualitative methods, the researchers present a project involving an online course with personalized learning activities. Self-determination theory was applied as a framework to investigate students’ perceptions of the three basic psychological needs of SDT, and their relation to students’ intrinsic motivation when enrolled in online course implementing PL principles. The results revealed implementing personalized learning principles was effective and contributed to supporting students’ self-determination (autonomy and competence), and intrinsic motivation. Further, students perceived PL as engaging and effective in meeting their learning needs and interests. The results also indicated that the instructor’s role is crucial to PL implementation and to students’ feelings of relatedness. However, PL implementation can lead to isolating students in online courses.
