Students' Perspective on Factors Influencing Advanced Placement Enrollment in Urban Schools

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Despite the expansion of the advanced placement program to include all students regardless of their demography, location, or socioeconomic status, minority students are still underrepresented in the program. This was study was conducted using survey approach involving 256 urban students who were enrolled in advanced placement (AP) courses to examine their motivation to enroll in the program. The findings showed two major predictors: a) students’ intrapersonal persuasion and b) teacher knowledge base, influenced their decisions. This inquiry highlights students’ use of their human agency to make decisions that inform stakeholders on how to better recruit, prepare, and retain them in the AP programs.
