Community Awareness Through an Art Walk Experience: Can Ideologies Change?

Fri, April 17, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This study examined preservice teachers (PSTs) reflections on an “art walk” in an urban community surrounding a K-5 public school where they both worked with students and took university courses. Some students’ ideologies were altered by the experience while others continued to hold stereotypical views of this community. Utilizing critical whiteness studies to interrogate deficit ideologies, I focus on two PSTs’ reflections, arguing that place is important in teacher education programs and when we imbed PSTs’ coursework in the communities where they also teach, which are often different from their own experiences and histories, attitudes may change or be altered.
