What Is the Role of Community-Based Charter Schools in Education Justice Movements?

Abstract

This paper highlights important findings published in Twenty-First-Century Jim Crow Schools: The Impact of Charters on Public Education. While charter schools offer new possibilities for educational opportunity to hopeful parents and families, the book highlights the pitfalls of charter expansion, particularly in the backdrop of broad education justice movements led by teachers, youth, and community organizers who challenge privatization and call for democratically-controlled public schools. In light of the book’s core findings, this paper explores the unique, but contested role of community-based charter schools in movements for educational change.
