A Civic Democratic Assessment of Current School Choice Policies

Abstract

Who should decide how and where to educate children? Decision-making about schools and education indicate the way society sees its collective aims for children, and thus for its own future. This paper, based on the recent book “Making Up Our Minds: What School Choice is Really About” offers a normative analysis of three key areas of contention regarding school choice, and argues for focusing on democratic aims in evaluating the arguments raised by school choice and by public schools advocates.
