Race in Place: Rurality and Education in the Making of Oppression

Abstract

Wide is the research on the critical education inequity low-income urban students of color experience; however, much work remains to be done for rural education. More importantly, scholarship studying the forces shaping study participants’ context, instead of studying participants themselves, is far less available. This paper on one rural school in Central California gives primacy to place and space as central unit of analysis to addresses this education research gap. Through the close examination of four focal participant’s narratives as they interact with the school space provides us with critical insights to the ways in which the physical location first, and social location second, shapes and sustains unequal historical material and social conditions for students and families of farmworking communities.
