Pathway to the Professoriate: Community Colleges as Access Points for Students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions

Abstract

Drawing on interviews from a longitudinal study with 90 undergraduates at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), this qualitative project explores how community colleges act as an entry point to graduate school for students in a grant-funded program aimed to diversify the humanities professoriate. Findings point to the key role community colleges play in providing access to postsecondary education (particularly for non-traditional students), and how interactions with community college faculty lead to interests in pursuing graduate school.
