Theoretical Considerations and Empirical Evaluation of a Three-Dimensional Scale Capturing Task-Specific Expectancy Beliefs

Abstract

Although expectancy-value theory (EVT) states that expectancy-related beliefs are a multidimensional construct (Eccles & Wigfield, 2002; Pekrun, 2006), measures that incorporate multiple dimensions of expectancy-related beliefs are scarce. Thus, this study aims at examining the structure of a three-dimensional expectancy scale capturing control beliefs, strategy beliefs and competence beliefs. The subscales were developed in an iterative process based on theoretical considerations integrating different motivational perspectives. Results from confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) support the assumption, that control, strategy and competence beliefs are independent but related expectancy beliefs.
