#riseUP! A Black Lives Matter in Music Education Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) proposes a paradigm shift in music education, moving away from a skill based system of banking education where the students (apprentices) do only/mainly as the master (teacher) tells them to (Freire,1970, Allssup, 2016) and toward a critical, youth co-created liberatory pedagogy where students use music to read the world as well as the word. Reimagining Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Culture Circles and influenced by music activists in the world, #riseUP! positions youth as co-creators of culture, research, theory, and knowledge.
