Forming Partnerships: Parental Practices of Latinx First-Generation College Students Seeking to Support College Students

Sat, April 18, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Despite efforts of several Chicanx Latinx researchers to document the experiences of parents in the educational process of their children, most mainstream higher education researchers have consistently overlooked the study of the engagement of Latinx parents at home, school and in the community. Given the strong familial ties often attributed to Latina/o communities, examining Latinx family practices is a viable avenue to increase high school graduation and college enrollment rates. Using Yosso’s Community Cultural Wealth Framework, this study seeks to understand the multiple ways Latinx parents contribute to, participate in, and influence the college transition of their children while seeking ways to support their children given FERPA limitations. This study documented parent practices of families seeking to navigate higher education institutions to support their students attending college.
