Redefining Community Interventions: The Latinx Youth Group

Abstract

The presentation will describe a community collaborative effort to provide needed clinical services to Latino students through the formation of a youth group held at a suburban high school in Contra Costa County, California. The goals were to support Latino students’ adjustment to the school environment and to identify barriers that prevented attainment of a meaningful learning experience. The students were self referred or by school administrators and/or staff due to poor academic performance, behaviors that interfered with classroom learning - arriving late to class, truancy, and disrespect toward teachers, staff, or peer students -. Institutional barriers to success are discussed.
