Social Studies Standards, Curriculum Development, Pedagogy, and The Teachings of PtahHotep, the World's Oldest Book

Abstract

Several studies have examined the importance of multicultural curriculum development, but none place the world’s oldest book in the center of standards-based Social Studies curricula. Though recently revised, the National Council for Social Studies Standards do not fully reflect global aspects of multicultural education. This article examines its offerings relative to the contributions of The Teachings of PtahHotep, the oldest book in the world. Using critical content analysis, this case study employs an Afrocentric framework to examine how The Teachings of PtahHotep aligns with the revised National Social Studies Standards, and it addresses implications for curriculum development and pedagogy. Findings indicate that inclusion of The Teachings of PtahHotep in the Social Studies curriculum has several implications for pedagogical practices.
