Effects of a Diagnostic Statistics Assessment on Student Knowledge and Affect

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The ability to analyze and interpret data is grounded in fundamental conceptions about data that should be developed in elementary and middle school. To this end, the project developed a formative, diagnostic assessment system that teachers can use to identify and address misconceptions in middle grades statistics. The results from a randomized controlled trial showed that students whose teachers had access to the system demonstrated improved statistical understandings and a reduced presence of misconceptions.
