Evaluating the Impact of a Community-Based Summer Math Program on Students' Mathematics Achievement and Attitudes

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the impact of the math camps on participating students. researchers examined if students participating in the math camps scored significantly higher on post math achievement measures at the end of the camps after controlling for pre math achievement. Additionally, researchers examined if students attitudes towards math changed significantly after participating in the summer camps. For all assessment data, summer math camp students scored significantly higher on the post-assessment. Regarding math attitudes and motivation, elementary school students’ mean scores increased significantly on Enjoyment of Math and Importance of Math. These findings suggest that students were increasing their math ability and attitudes towards math by participating in the summer math camps.
