Changes in Advanced Students' Achievement Goals in Summer Programs

Fri, April 17, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

In this session, we will report on a study investigating changes in students’ achievement goals as a result of participating in two summer programs for advanced learners. We also examined whether the type of program, gender, learning climate, and teachers’ mindsets moderated changes in achievement goals. Endorsement of performance-approach goals decreased during the summer programs. Performance-avoidance goals increased significantly for males and females in both programs. There was no change in mastery goals. Teachers’ mindsets affected the change in performance-approach goals: Students in classes with teachers with a relatively high growth mindset experienced significantly less decrease in performance-approach goals. We will discuss results in relation to the role of learning environment in altering students’ achievement goals.
