Very few studies have explored either mentorship that takes place between students or mentorship that comes from a critical race perspective. We bridge these two gaps in the literature with this paper that discusses what critical race theory looks like when put into the practice of mentoring undergraduate Students of Color in social justice-driven research and mentoring programs. We share how the design of those initiatives – which pair graduate Students of Color with cohorts of undergraduates – is grounded in a critical race framework that cultivates what we conceptualize as the critical race mentoring that takes place between graduate and undergraduate students to build the academic invulnerability that can come with navigational capital.
