A Systematic Review of Translanguaging: A Synthesis of the Concept From a Plurilingual Perspective

Abstract

Translanguaging has rapidly assumed prominence within the field of applied linguistics in recent years, and a systematic review of the research is timely. This paper provides a critical review of the research on translanguaging in peer reviewed journals and book chapters published in English from 2000 to 2019. In total, 244 relevant articles were retrieved in relation to the education range K-16, and in-depth study-feature coding was completed. From the analysis of this body of research, the present paper provides preliminary findings on translanguaging as a concept from diverse contexts, and offers recommendations for future practice and research in the area.
